Tools for a Conscious Living Part III: Shopping with Intention

In a world built to keep us buying more, Tools for Conscious Living invites us to pause, reflect, and rethink what truly matters. In Part II: Rethinking Our Food Source, we examined how the food we eat connects to larger systems of environmental and social justice. Now, we turn to another essential part of daily life: the products we bring into our homes. From clothing to paper to furniture, the choices we make carry consequences—both seen and unseen. Here are practical ways to shop with greater awareness and responsibility:

  • Buy products that are manufactured sustainably – with respect to the environment and the people producing them.
  • Buy organic clothing – cotton has the most pesticide use of any crop.
  • Buy sweat-free and fair-trade products – products made by giving fair wages to workers. Many of the products we buy today are made in sweat-shops under inhumane working conditions by big corporations without regard to the environmental and labor laws.
  • Buy 100% recycled, chlorine free copy paper & toilet paper – saves trees and creates a demand for recycled paper.
  • Buy wood products, furniture etc., which are FSC® certified. FSC® certification ensures that the wood comes from sustainable forestry practices.
A better world is possible and it is up to us to makeit happen
