Carbon Giving

Taking the Right Steps Toward a Zero Carbon World

Climate change is one of the biggest challenges facing humanity. Every action we take as a business has a consequence, so we have taken steps to lower the carbon emissions that come from our manufacturing. World Centric® products take less energy to make than traditional disposables and we work to reduce carbon emissions throughout the entire lifecycle of our compostable goods. We also partner with environmental and social organizations whose programs not only offset our carbon emissions but engage local communities.

Our Products

The production of traditional single-use food packaging contributes to climate change and negatively impacts people and the planet. Conventional plastics require the extraction and refinement of petroleum and natural gas. Paper products are typically sourced from the cheapest wood fiber available, regardless of how the forest was logged.

World Centric® compostable foodservice packaging is plant-based and designed to be commercially composted so it can be added to the soil. We are committed to product innovation that’s better for the planet and work to reduce our carbon emissions throughout the entire lifecycle of our products.

We utilize sustainable materials like sugarcane bagasse leftover from the refining process and fast-growing renewable bamboo fibers to create containers, plates, bowls, cups, and other compostable foodservice ware. When we do use wood tree fiber for cups and bowls, we use responsibly sourced paper certified by FSC® or SFI® to help preserve forest ecosystems. To encourage the recycling market and utilize existing materials, we use 100% post-consumer waste recycled paper for napkins, towels, and coffee sleeves. We also encourage and help our suppliers to achieve their environmental goals, including ISO 14001 certification and switching to cleaner energy sources.

Our Company

We annually calculate the carbon footprint of our manufacturing, shipping to the USA, warehousing, office operations (including business travel and commuting), and shipping to customers. We use this information to determine the allocation of our annual giving required to offset our carbon emissions. We fund grassroots environmental projects that not only allow us to offset our carbon emissions, but also enable organizations to help those most affected by climate change with long-lasting solutions.

In addition to our carbon offsets giving, we also utilize solar and renewable energy at our company headquarters, support our staff in leasing or purchasing electric vehicles and using public transportation to commute to work, and strive to keep our team informed and engaged about environmental and social issues.

Our Impact

World Centric® upholds rigorous social and environmental responsibility standards and donates 25% of net profits to organizations addressing social and environmental issues, with more than $1.5 million allocated for donations in 2021. Each year, based on our carbon footprint, we allocate funds to support organizations with long-term solutions to reduce and sequester carbon, which in turn improves the resilience of many of the communities most affected by climate change.

For 2020, our carbon giving supported these organizations and causes:
Indigenous communities are the first defenders of the environment and are facing exploitation on their land for commodified natural resources. Ensuring Indigenous land sovereignty prevents land-based carbon emissions, and maintains or increases carbon sequestration.

Access to quality education for women and girls is a powerful solution for avoiding carbon emissions by curbing population growth. Women with more years of education have fewer and healthier children, and actively manage their reproductive health. We funded organizations that support the rights of women and girls to seek education and health care in otherwise impoverished areas where the government does not provide these basics.
