The top soil and land cover in the Northwest of Haiti has been decimated due to persistent charcoaling and clear-cutting, contributing to drought and falling water table, reduction of water yields, reduction of arable land, and desertification. The factors which contribute to this crisis have been further complicated by the continued socio-economic crisis in Haiti, the deepening isolation of the region, outward migration due to lack of livelihoods opportunities, and a string of natural and political disasters.
World Centric has partnered with DESPRI since 2015 to reforest the Northwest Artibonite of Haiti, utilizing 6 community-managed tree nurseries. The nurseries are each associated with women’s Self Help Groups, who are the recipients of many of the trees grown.
