Carbon Offsets Project
With thousands fleeing Honduras each year due to lack of opportunity, addressing migration must occur at the root. Over 80% of rural Hondurans depend on firewood using open fires, contributing to deforestation and a host of respiratory, ocular, cardiovascular and metabolic illnesses. After the failure of the state-run cookstove program in 2018, scaling up TWP’s cookstove programs represents a significant opportunity to stimulate the local economy, improve health, and protect the environment.
Trees, Water & People partners with the Center for Education in Sustainable Agriculture (CEASO) in Honduras to train communities in agroecology and sustainable technologies and to distribute cookstoves. Justa Cookstoves are manufactured in-country, using locally sourced materials. These stoves decrease the amount of firewood fuel needed for each family for 50-70% and improve household air pollution by 80%.
